With the purchase of my serger, I was able to attend free classes to learn how to use it to its max potential. Jeri attended with me using Jan's serger and we had a great time.
We worked pretty hard to get the machines threaded correctly and were able to sew some overlock samples. The Bernina was a bit fiddly but Jeri got it working. I had to fiddle with mine a bit, but once I got with the program, it was pretty easy.
Instead of using the extended thread spool holder, we learned to use the four main holders for the basic 4 stitch overlock.
I stayed for the Learning your Feet classes and we used a variety of functions and made samples.
We started with the elastic foot and learned about differential feed. My elastic definitely needs more work.
We also used the ruffling foot to gather fabric and made a pooling strip.
We then attached some ruffles using only fabric which made a nice border.
We also used the blind hem foot to approximate hemming which is also referred to as a 2 thread flat lock. It creates ladders on the right side of the fabric but makes a strong hem.
The next section dealt with lace, cords, and beads. First up was attaching lace using the lace foot with the same threading as the blind hem.
Then we moved to cords where we wrapped a cord in fabric using the cording foot.
We then attached this cord to a piece of fabric carefully turning corners.
Taking another piece of the blue fabric, we traced the cord again sandwiching it between the two pieces of fabric on three sides.
It was magic to turn the piece inside out.
At the top opening, after folding the raw edges in and pressing, we used the beading foot and added a string of beads.
It was a long day mentally but so enlightening and I can't believe what I have been missing!
