Color Repeats with Judith MacKenzie

The second assignment at the espinner retreat in Forks was spinning color repeats for sock yarn.  We were asked to go to the fiber table and pick up different colors of top for this task.  All these fibers came from Ashland Bay and can be ordered except for the hot pink.  Ashland Bay dyed this color specifically for Judith.
The choices were endless but Judith recommended that we pick colors that were not similar.  Here are the colors that I chose.
We then watched her demonstrate how to spin long color repeats for this technique.

After spinning the single, she wrapped it around her hand to show the color repeats.
After plying the single back on itself, here is the yarn wrapped around her hand.  Judith stated that doing so give you an idea of how a sock would look.  She did say that sock yarns should be a 3 ply.
Here is my finished sample - in a 2 ply.  I had a hard time changing colors and drafting at the same time.
The technique is as follows:

- Start with 3 different colors of roving
- Spin across starting with the first color and blending into the second color and blending into the third color and reverse and repeat
- After a while drop, one of the colors and replace with another color and repeat the above step
- Continue in this manner dropping a color at a time and replacing with another color.

Result - hand spun sock yarn with uniform color bands.
