Warping Your Loom Review

I purchased the download version of Warping Your Loom by Madelyn van der Hooght from Interweave Press.  The DVD version is $34.95 and the download version is $29.95.  According to the video teaser, Madelyn covers warping front-to-back and back-to-front.

I learned back-to-front warping and wanted to see how front-to-back worked.  The video also includes:

- warping on a warping board - singles, doubles, using a paddle/heddle, and alternating colors
- warping on a warping reel - horizontal and vertical
- bobbin winding on an electronic bobbin winder
- sleying the reed at the table
- threading the heddles
- winding the warp - using sticks and paper
- adding additional warp threads to an warp already on the loom

She also shows some pointers on using lease sticks and a raddle.  Madelyn is very clear and succinct in her method of warping from front-to-back.  She makes it look very easy to do.

Being that I'm a fairly new weaver, I was a bit confused with her discussion of the back-to-front method.  She does something with the warping board and then uses the raddle and sets up a cross, but does not follow through with threading the heddles or sleying the reed.  I would have like more information on this as none of it matched what I learned to do.  There is no discussion about sectional warping on this video.

The first disk was very informative and allows you to think that you too can easily warp your loom from front-to-back.  Madelyn is very systematic in her approach. The recording is well lighted and provides quite a few close ups so you can see exactly what is being done. However, the other disk seemed rushed with truncated and incomplete information for the other method.

Overall, a very enlightening video and one you can refer to many times to help you perfect your winding a warp and putting it on the loom (front-to-back).  You definitely can do this by yourself after watching the video.
