Yarn U

I got a promo copy of Yarn U by Mary Beth Klath, an iPad app, for review.  It is available from iTunes for $2.99 and is also available for the iPod.

The app provides a listing of yarns by brand, yarn weight, stitch gauge, fiber content, and yardage.  Some of the yarns also include free patterns as well as links to other websites.  Under each yarn listing, there is a pro versus con section regarding the yarn.  I presume that these are reviews by individuals who have used these yarns.

At the top of the app, there are tabs for searching by name and by fiber type.  You can also see categories by yarn company brand, by yarn weight, and by other titles such as hand dyed.

There are a few links to video reviews of the yarns as well as links to pattern designers and places where you can purchase the yarn.

There is also a photo gallery at the bottom right corner where you can see all of the photos in the app as well as a comment section.

Under each yarn selection, you can add a comment with your own evaluations or other notes.  It would be helpful if these comments could be seen on the actual page of the yarn but as far as I could tell, you had to go to the comment section and all the comments are listed consecutively and not by any search criteria.

If you are use to the yarn function on Ravelry, this is really a basic listing of yarn.  There are limited links to projects made and no discussions about the yarn.  Not all yarns are listed either but I assume that as the app grows, more yarns will be included.

My conclusion is that the app is a nice quick look at yarns which will hopefully grow in time.  I think that I'm spoiled so I will probably be relying on the Ravelry yarn guide instead.
